The Aran Group, situated south of Bala Lake running parallel with the main A494 Llangollen to Dolgellau road, offers the highest peaks in the UK south of Snowdon.
It is a mountain range that is often overlooked and this is much a pity as they offer tremendous ridge walking. The northern peak of Aran Benllyn (885m) is the start of a rugged ridge that extends south towards Aran Fawddwy (905m).
The view from the A494 gives the impression on the northwest side of a rounded grassy summit area. However the summit ridge from the south-east is marked by rugged cliff lines. Indeed the southern limits are marked by Cwm Cywarch which is a secluded gem of a valley.
Aran Fawddwy, which is only 9 metres (30 ft) short of being a member of the Welsh 3,000’s, is the highest peak in the Aran mountain range and the 16th highest summit in Wales.
